What was once a surgery performed primarily to restore, is now used to enhance a person’s face and body. Cosmetic surgery, which is said to have been â€Å"used more than 4,000 years ago to treat facial injuries† (Fresh Faces) is now considered a common activity among any kind of person. This surgery first gained popularity in the 1910’s after World War I, among soldiers with shattered war faces in need of repair. Later, it became a popular trend among women, who were mostly from high-class society, and then in the 1990’s the industry expanded to include men, and even more recently has been including teenagers as young as the age of 15. It was treated as if it were an average, everyday procedure that could be done for anyone, anytime. In fact, â€Å"accor ding to a study by the American Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, the risk of death from liposuction is one fatality per 47,415 procedures, but the rate increases to once every 3,281 procedures when liposuction is combined with abdominoplasty.† (Friedman) The more surgeries a person undergoes, the higher their risk is, especially when the surgery is unnecessary to begin with. While the media does leave these alarming facts out, once the teen decides to have cosmetic surgery, the teen and his or her parent would have to consult with a surgeon who would then, assuming the surgeon was reliable, relay the risk involved. It would then be up the parent as well as the child to decide whether to continue or not. Many ask themselves why someone would run the risk of suffering from, nerve damage, brain damage or even death, and knowingly scar themselves all for the â€Å"right† breasts or the â€Å"perfect† face.
